The 2016 census officially puts the Village of Halkirk’s population at 112 people. This is a drop of nine people from 2012, although the populations seems to vary from month to month. The census also reveals that there are 56 private dwellings, a figure that CAO Doris Cordel disputes, as it differs from the utility records. There are presently three houses listed for sale.
Office hours at the Village office are Tuesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paul Dietrich is the maintenance employee working five days a week from May to September, with a STEP student assisting in July and August. Garbage pick up is on Monday and Thursday. Melody Kent assists in the office and/or on maintenance duty as necessary. The transfer station for our area is open Wednesday, from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Village operates its own gas and water and sewer systems. The Fire Department is serviced through the office. The number to call is 911. Ross Elsasser is the fire chief and there are 14 volunteers on the team. New members are always welcome to ensure a full response, as several members work out of town.
It is now time to start thinking about names to put forward for Village councillor. Nomination day is Sept. 18. The current council consists of Mayor Dale Kent, with Sherry Jamieson and Matt Koenraadt as councillors. The Village office will have the necessary paper work. Councillors meet a minimum of once a month as well as serve on a variety of committees.
Sept. 18 is also the nomination date that our county councillors follow. Present councillors are Rocky Dahmer from the South and Doreen Blumhagen from the North.
Congratulations to Jenna Nibourg and Brett Hauck who were married on Saturday, Aug. 5, in the pasture on the edge of the coulees at the farm home of the bride’s parents. The bride and her dad arrived in an antique 1952 Fargo truck, once owned by her grandpa, Lorne Theaker, which has been completely restored. She wore her grandma, Min Nibourg’s wedding dress that had been updated by Aunt Thelma. A giant tent was set up in the beautifully decorated yard, organized by Melody Neufeld. The food for the reception was prepared, organized and cooked by the groom’s parents with help from local ladies. Dancing and a campfire completed the evening. The newlyweds make their home at the Lazy T ranch.
Sympathy is extended to Dora (Strome) Morasch and family and to Joyce (Bedson) Neilson and family on the passing of their nephew Charles (Chub) Bedson on Thursday, Aug. 3. A celebration of life was held on Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Coronation Hall.
Kim Turre Lindballe and her mom, Connie Turre, were in New York City recently to attend a business award ceremony. Kim’s business, Bra Necessities in Camrose won the Best of Intama Award 2017 for Saxxs best men’s underwear retailer. She calls it a career highlight!
The Johnson family enjoyed their annual family camping get together at Mara Lake, near Sicamous, B.C. last week. Attending were Kent and Evelyn; JD and Sandra, Devon, Toryn and Aspen and a friend Ali Shaw from Coronation; Kim and Darrell , Taylor and Drew; Kandice and Forbes. The only smoke and fire that they saw was when they were crossing the Alberta and B.C. border on their way home. Grandson Forbes Morrison from Vancouver has been working at Deere Valley farms for the summer and will attend University of Calgary this fall.
