“There is a new Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) All-Round champion, and he is close to home.

Logan Spady was awarded the championship title after the conclusion of the CFR Finals hosted in Red Deer earlier in November.

The win caps off a “long year” for Spady.

“The CFR has about 50 rodeos,” said Spady.

“I went to about 70. “

Spady says that in addition to the CFR-sanctioned rodeos, he was on the rodeo trail south of the border as well, honing his craft.

To qualify for the All-Around, a cowboy needs to win at least three cheques competing in two separate events. For Spady, those events were team roping and tie-down roping.

Once qualified, the goal is to win as much as possible to have the most points, and money, at the end of the season.

Spady, who turned pro in 2019, says he has been doing rodeo “as long as I can remember.”

“At least since sixth grade,” said Spady.

“I’ve roped ever since I can remember.”

While the Alliance, Alta.-based cowboy is looking forward to some downtime over the holiday season, Spady says he will be heading south of the border in the new year to get back into training.

“I run a lot of practise steers,” said Spady.

“I just let the reaction take place.”

The rodeo season in Canada runs from around April to October, and during the peak months, Spady says he can attend four to six rodeos per week.

“You get used to it,” said Spady.

“You get immune to it. You get as much sleep as you can when you can.”

Going forward, Spady’s goal is to win the All-Around championship again, and maybe win as the Canadian Championship Heeler, though he admits that competing professionally is different than competing as an amateur.

“The competition is a lot steeper,” said Spady.

“It takes a lot to wrap your head around.”
