Castor’s main street was a flurry of activity on Aug. 11.
The street was the site of the second annual Castor Cruise-in, a local car show that was revived last year by Cori Fawcett of Halkirk. Prior to last year, the previous Castor car show was organized in the early to mid-2000s.
When Fawcett began organizing the show for 2017 many community sponsors quickly jumped on board by donating various prizes. For the 2018 car show, even more businesses from the region stepped up, filling the prize table and allowing gift bags to be done up for show entrants.
The show, which ran from 10 in the morning until 2:30 p.m. brought in 45 cars and trucks of all types from around the region, though the biggest and noisiest of the vehicles attending was the racecar brought from Red Deer by Tony Redelback. His car can be regularly seen on the Castrol Raceway track in Edmonton.
The 45 registered vehicles didn’t include the half-dozen vehicles that didn’t register, and that number easily eclipsed the 30 registered vehicles in 2017.
Everyone who attended the show, had the option to participate, be it entrant or community member, as everyone was able to vote for their favourites in the various categories.
The award for Best Truck went to Ken Bengat, who brought his 1938 custom truck named Rat Rod. Best Car went to Richard Bonin for his 1970 Dodge Dart, and Best Old School vehicle went to Dale Emmet, with his 1929 Dodge. Ken Bengat was called forward again to accept the price for People’s Choice. In a new category for 2018, Hunter Baldwin took the award for Best Vehicle Owned by Someone Under 20 with his ‘46 Jeep Willys.
Fawcett said she was impressed with the turn out this year and she is already setting her sights on making it bigger and better for 2019.
