Castor archery team on solid-footing heading into provincials

The Gus Wetter School Raiders archery program is off to a successful start in 2022, having competed in two recent tournaments.

In the first tournament, the team travelled to Wetaskiwin to compete in the Sabres Archery National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Tournament on Feb. 24.

In Wetaskiwin, Myla Geall finished first for Grade 6 girls and fourth overall for middle school girls.

Over in Grade 5, Kelsey Stirling finished first in her grade and first overall for elementary Girls. Olivia Weeks finished third in the grade and fourth overall for elementary girls.

For the Grade 5 boys, Hunter Tauber finished fifth in the grade and fifth overall.

In Grade 4, Charlie deBussac finished first in her grade and third overall in elementary girls. Hannah Weeks finished third in Grade 4 girls, while sister Laney came in right behind in fourth place.

Rounding out the top five in the grade was McKenzie Stirling, who was competing as a Grade 3.

In the boys’ division, Treston Erion finished first in first place.

Over 530 archers from 12 schools ranging from Grades 3 to 12 took part in the Wetaskiwin tournament.

In Altario, the Raiders had an equally positive showing.

Piper Dennie took top place in the middle school girls, first in Grade 8 girls, and first overall for girls.

Annabelles Stirling finished second in middle School Girls, coming in first for Grade & girls and fourth overall.

Isabella Aquila finished third overall for middle school girls, coming in second place for Grade 7 girls and fifth overall.

Hannah Dennie came in fourth overall for middle school girls with a first-place finish for Grade 6 girls.

Kelsey Stirling finished first overall in elementary girls and first overall for Grade 5.

McKenziw Stirling finished second overall in elementary girls and first overall for Grade 4.

According to Castor head coach Nancy Tamblyn, the Altario tournament was “smaller” with 126 archers competing between Grades 3 and 12 from five different schools.

The next tournament for the archers takes place on March 8 and 9 in Castor.

Split between the two Castor schools, Gus Wetter will hold the Bull’s Eye competition while Theresetta will host the 3D tournament.

Close to 250 students from 12 schools are anticipated to take part.

Following the Castor tournament, the team will hit the highways north, travelling to Edmonton for the NASP provincial championships at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
