Coronation Royals’ loss streak continues

The bleeding continues for the Coronation Royals, who have now dropped to five straight losses to open the 2023-24 East Central Senior Hockey League Season.

Coronation’s latest loss comes on the road at the hands of the Forestburg Flyers, where that team earned its first win of the season on Nov. 18 with a 13-4 win.

Flying out t an early lead, Forestburg kept the pressure on with five goals in the first period. The first goal found the back of the net with around 13 minutes left with a shot by Ben Roth.

Nine seconds later, Chad Bergland added to the lead with a goal of his own.

With eight minutes remaining Justin Fuller found the back of the net.

To close the period, Alex Badry picked up a pair of goals, at the six-minute mark at again four minutes later.

After 20 minutes, the score was five-zero for the Flyers, with shits 16-9 also for the Flyers.

Just over 30 seconds into the second period, the Flyers found the back of the net again, this time with an unassisted shot by Brayden Davis.

Roth picked up his second goal of the night for Forestburg with 14 minutes left in the period.

The Royals finally managed to strike back as the game approached the halfway mark of the period; Captain Matt Hanger scored on the powerplay with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Forestburg retaliated, however, with three successive goals. Colton Cannady found the back of the net with 9:30 left on the clock; Alex Badry scored his third goal of the evening, earning a hat trick around 45 seconds later. Then Dallas Bergstrom found the back of the net with eight minutes left.

Scoring was done for the period; the Royals were able to strike back. Mike Numeier scored with just under five minutes left of the period, and Hanger picked up his second powerplay goal of the evening with around 45 seconds left in the period.

After 40 minutes, the score was 10-3 for Forestburg, with shots 18-13 in favour of the Royals. Penalties in the period went to Forestburg; Brock Dawbin and Jonny Garnter each picked up two minutes for interference.

Both teams appear to have found their defensive footing in the third period with the goal-scoring slowing significantly.

Coronation Royal Kayden Glasier opened scoring eight seconds into the frame, getting things off to a quick start.

The Flyers struck back with around 16:30 left on the clock with a goal by Braydan Davis.

Scoring slowed until 5 minutes left, when Chad Bergland picked up his second goal of the night, on the powerplay.

Alex Badry, notching his fourth goal of the night, found the back of the net on the powerplay with just under 30 seconds left.

After the third period, the final score was 13-4, for Forestburg. Shots in the third were 15-11 in favour of the Flyers. Coronation picked up four penalties in the third for hooking, slashing and roughing, and the Flyers picked up a two-minute penalty for holding.

Ending the game, overall shots were 44-38 in favour of Forestburg, and penalty minutes were 8-6 in favour of Royals.

The Royals are next in action on Nov. 24 when they host the Hughendon Jets in Castor.

This loss puts Coronation in eighth place, of nine teams, in the league standings.
