Halkirk’s Shane Doan was selected as one of the pallbearers for U.S. Senator John McCain’s funeral. McCain, a senator from the state of Arizona for 31 years and a U.S. presidential candidate and Shane Doan, former long-time captain of the Phoenix Coyotes, who was raised at Halkirk, Alberta, had formed a close friendship. This is quite an honour for Shane and his family.

Harvest operations are in full swing. Farmers are busy bringing in the harvest and finishing up gathering winter feed for their stock.

So consequently, there are few community events to report on during this busy time of year.

Word was received of the passing of Reverend Donald Axford on Aug. 24 at his home in Calgary. He was 81. Rev. Axford was well known in the Byemoor community where he served the parishioners of St. Paul’s Anglican Church for 15 years, as he did at St. George’s Anglican Church in Stettler as well.

Our thoughts of sympathy are with Rev. Axford’s family and friends in their time of loss.

Congratulations to Brittany Woelk and Liam Malloy who were married on Aug. 25. The ceremony took place on the property of the bride’s parents Chad and Kim Woelk northeast of Stettler, overlooking a picturesque coulee. The reception and dance were held in Stettler. Several relatives from Endiang attended.

We wish Brittany and Liam all the best for a long and happy married life.
