Castor music students share the story of ‘A Bear in War’

The end of May means it is time for Veronica Weber’s music students to showcase all they have learned over the last several months.

As usual, Weber themed the end of year recital. This year’s theme was “A Bear in War,” a true story from World War One about a teddy bear that was sent to Europe in a care package by a little girl for her father.

Unfortunately, the father died in combat and the bear was subsequently returned to the family who then offered it to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Starting at 7 p.m., the recital mixed passages of the bear’s story with 28 students performing different piano and violin pieces; a couple of students even performed their own compositions.

To enhance the story, Weber brought a family heirloom; a century-old teddy bear.

Entry to the well attended recital was by donation with the proceeds going to the Boiko family, from Coronation, who still have family in Ukraine.
