Close to 400 eat Turkey & Turnips in Halkirk Sunday

Floor curlers welcome Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Once again the Community Fall turkey supper was a huge success with 373 paying guests plus a host of wee ones. The Elks, who sponsor the supper, extend a thank you for the tremendous support of the many volunteers from our community with a special note of thanks to the chief organizer, Melody Kent.

Woops! Someone took home the wrong roaster. It’s a blue, oval pan that cooked a turkey. The larger one was left at the hall. Please check your cupboard and make the exchange at the post office. You’ll need that large one for Christmas.

The local Elks hosted the Fall District meeting on Saturday afternoon at the Hall. DD Dale Kent conducted the meeting. Discussion included the Elks supporting the “Gowns for Grads” to be held at Hanna with a similar program for tuxedos for the guys. Contact your local Elks for info on dates, etc. Also discussed was more family get-togethers similar to the summer golf tournaments.

Bernice Doan organized a well attended pre-Christmas vintage hand made craft sale at the senior centre on Saturday, Nov. 4 with a wide variety of products available. As always the baking was a big hit. Hopefully this becomes an annual event.

The seniors were floor curling in Botha this week. Paul, Jacquie, Edna and Wendy had a team there as did Anne and Adolf, each with their regular teams. Everyone had a great time.

We send our best wishes out to Shirley Vanak who has moved to a senior facility in Olds this week, to be closer to her daughter and family.

The sympathy of our community goes out to the family of Joe Neumeier who passed away on Nov. 5. Joe was a strong supporter of all the local Elk lodges and their activities. Services to be held on Nov. 13 from the Our Lady of the Grace Catholic church.

Word has been received on the passing of William Ernest ( Buddy ) Matier of Camrose on Nov. 3. Buddy’s passion was for training and racing thoroughbreds. He is survived by three daughters, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Among his many relatives is a cousin, Mary Stewart. The Matier story is on page 204 of Home Fires.

Coming up: Saturday, Nov. 18 – pot – luck dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a Southern Gospel musical presentation by Canada’s “Double Portion”, a family from North Battleford, Sk.; Tuesday, Nov. 21 – Seniors regular pot- luck supper and meeting followed by floor curling; Sunday, Dec. 3 – Elks annual “Breakfast with Santa” from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Hall; Thursday, Nov. 23 and Dec. 7 – regular hall board bingo commencing at 7:30 sharp. Dates are in for the Seafood and Comedy Nite – Feb. 3, 2018 – mark it down.
