Music for Mental Health returns to Stettler

Kalysta was 16 years-old when she took her own life, sending a shock-wave through the community.

While Kalysta’s suicide took place nearly six years ago, Stettler has faced other, similiar, tragedy’s as recently as the fall of 2022.

These tragedies are why Lesa Miller created Music for Mental Health, a fund-raising and support type event taking place at the Stettler Performing Arts Center on Jan. 26, 2023.

“I wanted to do something in (Kalysta’s) memory,” said Miller, Kalysta’s mom.

“She loved music.”

The 2023 event will be the fourth edition of the event, and though Miller no longer lives in the community, due to family ties she keeps bringing the event back.

“I get stronger every year; I get more passionate,” said Miller.

Funds raised in the event go to a different youth counselling centre every year; for 2023 funds are going to Stettler’s the Wellness House.

According to Miller, the number of places in Stettler which offer counselling to youth has increased in recent years, and getting youth connected with that support is important is important.

To assist with that goal, the evening will also serve as a resource fair so that those struggling with the community around them.

Musical talent will feature Stettler’s own Trailer Park Queens, as well as guest speaker and comedian Kristopher Marks.

Tickets are available at Stettler Family and Community Support Services, Wm. E. Hay High School, Wells Furniture, and through Lori Docherty at 403-396-0368.

“My dream is to bring awareness to mental health issues, to raise money, and to save at least one person’s life,” said Miller, wrapping up the interview.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students.
