The students at Theressetta were treated to a presentation by a couple of local authors on Oct 24th.
Nikki Wiart, a local area farmer and former journalist and writer with Maclean’s magazine, held an 80-minute session with the Theressetta grade 7/8/9 class, while another local, Heather Grovet, spoke with the 5/6 students about her writing career. At the end of the eighty minutes, the groups switched for another minute session.
“The motivation was simply to highlight how people in our communities are writers,” said teacher Richard Ries, “I thought it was interesting how each presenter spoke about how their writing was part of how they balanced life. “
Neither of the authors who presented write full-time. Wiart left her journalism career in the start of 2017, and while still doing some freelance work, mainly focuses on working on the family farm located near Castor. Grovet meanwhile hasn’t written in several years, focusing on her nursing career and her horses on the family farm.
All the students who attended the presentations were left with writing assignments based on the presentations, which they are currently working on.
