For the Advance

The Coronation Community Hall played host to classic-country inspired music group the Traveling Mabels on Feb. 1.

Through music and humour, the quartet entertained for just over two hours, including a brief intermission and an encore. They played a variety of songs, ranging from old favorites to newer originals, and some covers from singers that have influenced the group musically such as Billy Joel and Jerry Lewis.

For the encore, the group took fan requests and ended up playing “Wagon Wheel,” one of their original songs.

The Mabels have performed as a group for the last ten years, ever since friends Eva Levesque and Lana Floen traveled to the Canadian Country Music Awards in support of Eva’s daughter, Suzanne Levesque, as she had been nominated as bass-player of the year while playing with country singer Gord Bamford.

After attending an open mic night after the awards, the friends approached keyboardist Keith Floen about forming a group. The Mabels were born. Since they began touring, the band has self-released three albums with number four due out in 2019. Their tours have grown as well, finding them performing all over Canada, growing to 30 to 50 shows a year, a number which they see growing over the next few years.

“Over the next 5 years, we’ll hopefully be touring more, getting to know more people, and expanding into the U.S. and maybe Europe and Australia as well,” said band leader Keith Floen in a previous interview.

Next up, Coronation Performing Arts is hosting the final meal and concert of the season on Feb. 22, this time with the entertainment being provided by singer-songwriter Jaron Rovensky in an already sold-out show.
