For the first time in over two years laughter echoed throughout the Halkirk Community Hall.

While numbers were down from pre-COVID events, the Halkirk Elks comedy night was still reasonably well attended with around 100 people attending the supper and entertainment.

“It’s a different crowd than we usually get,” said Elks member Doreen Blumhagen.

The supper for the event was roast beef with the trimmings which was prepared by the volunteers of the Halkirk Elks.

What meat and buns were left after the dinner were auctioned off to those in the audience.

Several of the four-to-five-pound bags sold for over $30.

A pair of door prizes were also handed out after supper as well, a $100 gift certificate donated by How’s Greenhouse and a steak dinner for four donated by the Halkirk Hotel.

After the dishes were cleared it was time for the entertainment to hit the stage.

The entertainment for the show was Canadian performer Jody Peters.

Peters took to the stage for just over an hour, talking about his experiences growing up as an adopted Black child in a Mennonite community in Saskatchewan, rural farm life — which many people in the crowd were able to identify with — and raising children.

While Peters show wasn’t the cleanest of comedy, it wasn’t raunchy either and he succeeded in having the audience laughing for pretty much the entire time he was on stage.

According to his online biography, Peters has performed from coast-to-coast including at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal.

Peters is also know known for hosting the Canadian television series The Prairie Diner which ran from 2014 to 2016, a show he says is very similar to the American show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives but with “a tenth the budget.”

The Halkirk Elks Comedy Night is one of the major fundraisers of the year for the organization.
