Albertan man facing charges in B.C. after police chase ends with spike belts

The 40-year-old accused fled from Kelowna in a stolen vehicle and was apprehended near Vernon.

A 40-year-old Albertan man is facing several charges after allegedly stealing an SUV that ended in a police chase.

The incident happened at about 1:30 a.m. Friday, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said in a news release Saturday.

Officers were informed that a man in a stolen white Chevrolet Silverado was spotted on the Westside of Kelowna and had failed to stop for police.

A multi-member response was initiated after attempts to stop the vehicle using a spike belt failed and the man continued to travel northbound towards Vernon.

Vernon RCMP said officers spotted the suspect vehicle heading northbound on Highway 97, where it again failed to stop for police. A second spike belt was deployed, disabling the tires on the vehicle bringing it to a stop on Highway 97.

But it didn’t stop there. Police said that the man then tried to drive away on all four rims, but was unsuccessful. Officers were able to remove the man out of the Silverado and he was taken into custody without incident.

“As we know, crime is often cross-jurisdictional, however in this particular incident was cross-provincial,” said Cst. Kelly Brett.

The man remains in police custody. Black Press Media has reached out to RCMP to confirm the identity of the Albertan man.
