Avian Influenza outbreak confirmed in County of Stettler

On July 30, 2022 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza in a flock within the County of Stettler.

On July 30, 2022 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza in a flock within the County of Stettler.

An investigation has begun. A quarantine and control protocols have been implemented in the affected area.

The county stated no further details about the outbreak will be released at this time.

“Avian influenza, subtype H5N1, is highly pathogenic and is spreading in wild bird population across the globe and presents a significant national concern as birds migrate to Canada,” stated the release.

Symptoms within flocks can include: lack of energy/appetite, decreased egg production, lack of coordination, coughing, gasping for air, diarrhea and sudden death.

Bird owners are legally responsible to notify authorities of suspected cases.

The county said while they will provide updates for informational purposes for residents and producers as they become available, they are not directly involved in the process and any questions should be directed to the CFIA.
