Take a short drive down Hwy #56 to Big Valley Saturday, Jan. 6 and you’ll be set to watch the Stettler Lightning defending their home-away-from-home against the Ponoka Stampeders in Heritage junior B hockey action.

Lightning head coach Rory Rost said the Bolts have no problem playing in Big Valley as their second home arena. “We’ve had really good luck in Big Valley,” said Rost by phone Jan. 4. “I think we’re undefeated down there.”

The Stampeders, with a record of 7-12-2, are below the Bolts, 10-12-3, in divisional standings. Rost said the Lightning have played these Stampeders twice, once in pre-season and once in the regular season, and the Bolts lost a close one-goal game, with a short bench that night playing a factor.

“I think if we have a full squad, I’m hoping we’ll throw our speed at them,” said the head coach, adding that the Lightning are aware their special teams play will be vital.

Rost said practice looked good this week, and with several losses this season by only a goal, plus only a single minor penalty in two league games he sees plenty of potential in January, 2018.

The puck drops between the Lightning and Stampeders Sat., Jan. 6 in the Big Valley arena at 7:30 p.m.

All-star Bolts

The Stettler junior B Lightning also have two players headed to the Heritage League All-star game this weekend in Okotoks: Dylan Houston (22 goals, 28 assists and 50 points) and Kieran Rost (18 goals, 18 assists, 36 points).

The head coach noted both players are in the league top 15 scorers, both are consistent and dependable and both lead the team well.
