It could be a chance of a lifetime for some girls and women to play ball in the U-19, 2019 Western Canadian Softball Championship coming to Stettler Aug. 2nd-5th.

Held at the Stettler Sports Park, the local Stettler Storm U-19 softball team will be amongst the teams competing in the round robin competition, looking to be a top contender in the U-19 Western Canadian Softball Championship.

It’s going to be a competition to watch, explained Sarah Tucker, U-19 Stettler Storm head coach and president of Stettler Minor Ball.

“I want to emphasize that this is going to be good ball to watch and some kids may never see this sort of competition in their lives again,” she said, as she and her team, and other assistant coaches, Shauna Elines and Sarah McCrindle, prepared to head to Provincials.

“We have a strong group of girls,” Tucker said, noting that her team of 15 players is mostly made up of 17-year-olds, with only about five veteran 19-year-old players.

“We have a good group of girls and they have held their own. I’m hoping for good things, but mostly for them to have fun in this competition,” Tucker added.

The U-19, 2019 Western Canadian Softball Championship is made up of nine top provincial teams, three from Alberta, two from Saskatchewan, and two from British Columbia.

Each team is guaranteed to play four games but could play in up to six, depending on how successful they are.

Tucker was also sure to provide a nod to the Town of Settler, as well as the County of Settler for the support that they’ve received in order to host the Western Canadian Softball Championship.

“Our town is amazing, it’s a beautiful little town to be in,” she said.

Opening ceremonies will be held at the Stettler Sports Park on Friday, Aug. 2nd at 6 p.m.

A banquet, free of charge for officials, softball representatives, players and special guests will be held the Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, Aug. 3rd starting at 6 p.m.

There is a gate admission of $25 for the weekend, or $10 per day, into the park for spectators.

Kids 12 and under are able to attend for free.
