For the Advance

The Castor Town council has agreed to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with a local company to get rid of an unsightly mess in town.

Town of Castor administration has been working behind the scenes to rent a gravel crusher and begin dealing with the unsightly piles of spent concrete and asphalt that are creating an eye-sore off of Hwy. 12. Initially expected to cost around $30,000, administration has since found that the rental would cost more than budgeted.

Originally, the plan was to get employees of Filipenko Bros. Construction in Castor to run the rented machine, however the company has purchased one of their own that they are in the process of refurbishing.

Once the machine is ready to go, the company is ready to do the work for the town.

“Filipenko’s will crush it all, and take in payment what they crush,” said Chief Administrative Officer Christopher Robblee.

Once crushed, the concrete and asphalt can be reused for a variety of projects, which is why the company is offering to take the material in lieu of pay. If, once Filipenko’s calculates their costs and takes the corresponding material, there is any material left, the Town of Castor Public Works department will have the material to use for themselves.

Council was happy that after years of complaints, something was being done with the piles.

“It will be nice to get that cleaned up,” said Deputy Mayor Tony Nichols, before motioning to sign the Memorandum of Agreement with Filipenko’s.

When asked about a timeline for getting the piles dealt with, Robblee, who has been working with Filipenko’s to bring this together, said the company would like to do the crushing sometime this summer.
