10th Annual Steel Wheel Stampede kicks off June 7

Jerry Sinclair is honourary parade marshall

The 10th Annual Steel Wheel Stampede kicks off June 7 and runs until June 9 with lots of family entertainment on the Stettler Agriculture grounds.

Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer Jerry Sinclair is this year’s honourary parade marshal.

“Helping out with this event is a great way to give back to an organization that’s given so much to me,” said Sinclair. “It’s also a great event for this community.”

Sinclair began his career at 19 in Saddle Bronc. When he reached the 10 seconds required to qualify back then he was hooked on the adrenalin rush. He entered amateur rodeos in 1969 and moved up the ranks.

He entered the Calgary Stampede in 1970 and won the North America Champion Saddle Bronc Rider of the Year and went on to become the Canadian Championship Bronc Rider and was named the Rookie of the Year.

Winning all three awards in one year is an accomplishment no one else has achieved and he still holds the record.

Sinclair placed in the Calgary Stampede 11 of his 13 years and qualifying for the CFR three years; Sinclair decided to retire in 1982.

In 2001, Jerry and his wife Lana moved to the Stettler area where they remained active in local horse events. Jerry co-chaired the inaugural Stettler Steel Wheel Stampede committee with Ted Nibourg and held the additional position of arena director. He remains on the committee today and maintains his arena director role.

During his time with the rodeo, Sinclair has been judge, flank man and pick up man. He was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame as a contestant in 2008.

The 10th Annual Steel Wheel Stampede parade will start at the Rotary Spray Park at 11 a.m. The route this year has been extended. To see the updated parade route map, visit www.stettlerboardoftrade.com.
