The Town of Castor was bustling on Oct. 27.
There was no shortage of community events to take advantage of during the day on the weekend before Halloween.
The day started off with the Cliff Campbell Alumni Volleyball Tournament running all day in the Gus Wetter School gymnasium. Six men’s teams and 5 women’s teams, including two teams made up of current Gus Wetter students, competed in round-robin play and current students also ran a concession that served hot-dogs, chili, and popcorn.
The annual fall Castor I.O.D.E rummage sale drew many people to town at the well-attended event. Shoppers descended on the Castor Community Hall at the 11 a.m. start to try and find some deals. As 2 p.m. hit, many folks returned to the hall hoping to find even better deals at the hall during the bag-sale which ran from 2 p.m. until the sale closed at 3:30 p.m. The ladies of I.O.D.E. will be back in the spring with another sale. Keep your eye out for details.
Starting at 5:30 p.m. the future home of the Castor Volunteer Fire Department took on a spooky air as the members hosted their annual haunted house and foodbank fund-raiser. Atco electric sponsored free hot-dogs, and Westmoreland Coal sponsored a local area magician to entertain old and young alike. A fire safety-themed bounce house was also on hand! This year’s event raised $770 for the foodbank and a pickup truck box full of food donations.
Castor F.C.S.S. hosted the annual family dance at the community hall starting at 7 p.m. The well-attended event had Castor Minor Sports selling popcorn and beverages and featured a local D.J. The highlight for the kids was when a couple of Minions showed up and started handing out candy.
Sunday featured free pumpkin decorating for kids from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Castor Library, and the United Church hosted their annual Fall-supper and fundraiser at the at the Community Hall. Funds raised go towards upkeep and operations of Castor’s Knox United Church.
There is often a misconception in small towns that there is not much going on. For the small town of Castor located in the heart of East-Central Alberta, the community comes together to put that misconception to rest.
