Well, the Theresetta students and staff have been back at it for a few weeks now and as always, the month is again flying by fast. Students and teachers settled back into a routine quickly after their Christmas break. Many came back to school refreshed, relaxed, and ready to learn.
On Jan. 7, the first day of classes for 2019, the Grade 3/4 class visited the lodge during their music class to show off their rhythm skills. The class has been practising songs that have that using different techniques such as body percussion, stick-passing, and beat-keeping to keep a rhythm.
On Jan. 10 it was the kindergarten and Grade 1/2 class’s turn to entertain with their musical skills, as they headed across the street to Long Term Care. The group performed some upbeat action songs, including one about the 7 Habits that Theresetta practices and are an integral part of their Leader In Me program at the school.
The Grade 5/6 class has been busy studying electricity in their science classes. The students have made some shocking discoveries about what electricity can do for them. The class has also been starting to work on writing an opinion essay and are doing a great job learning how to express their opinion in a persuasive way. In music, the students have also discovered an alternative use for 5 gallon Home Hardware buckets as they have started exploring some bucket-drumming activities. All music classes will soon be starting to prepare for the upcoming annual Coronation Music Festival happening in March.
The girls’ basketball team have had a speedy start to their season. Already having played two exhibition game before the Christmas break, the girls were ready to hit the ground running at the beginning of the month. The team attended the Killam Kougars Classic Basketball Tournament on Jan. 11 - 12. Their first matchup was against the Consort Stingers squad, the girls played hard and came out with the win. Next up was the host team, the Killam Kougars who were a strong team and the Knights fought until the final buzzer but weren’t able to secure the win. The Knight’s final game of the tournament was against the Forestburg Falcons on Saturday, the girls again were defeated by the strong Falcon crew, but the girls came away thinking positive and knowing some key things they needed to work on in their following practices.
In league play, both the Knight basketball teams travelled to Brownfield on Jan. 16 for the first league game of the season. The girls played hard, worked together well and ended up scoring 70 points against Brownfield’s 43 to earn the win. The boys played second, even though it was their first game back on the hardwood since December, they worked hard as a team and were also able to earn their win with their score ending as 67-47. Good work Knights.
Theresetta students were able to enjoy a wellness session with the group Amped2Play, from the Red Deer area, on Jan. 14. All students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 had a session throughout the day with the theme aimed at being connected within our school community. This event fits well with the Theresetta Wellness program and the Amped2play leaders worked with Wellness coaches and students in a special session so they can be leaders in the school. Each grade was able to learn what it means to feel connected to one another throughout the school, as well as how to accept different opinions, feelings and ideas from others around them. They had fun learning these concepts through a variety of activities and dance. The Wellness team can’t wait to meet up with the Amped2play group again this year to help provide even more ideas to implement in Theresetta.
