It has been a volleyball action-packed few weeks at Theresetta.
Both teams travelled to Red Deer on Sept. 20th and 21st for the annual RDC tournament. Both teams put on a great showing and played hard all weekend.
The boys made it seem like they have been on a team together for years now. The way they worked together and played as a team, you couldn’t even tell that they had only had a handful of practices together.
They were able to win the B side of the draw against some much older teams that had many Grade 9 players compared to our two Grade 9 players. The two girls teams both did a great job in their matches. The older girls were able to win.
In League play, both teams travelled to Coronation for their second league matches on Sept. 25th.
The boys did a great job, winning four of the five sets.
They again showed off their great teamwork and ability to cover the floor. The girls put on a great showing as well, winning the first two of three league play sets 25-7 and 25-11.
They also showed off their communication skills and worked well no matter what players were on the court. The girls played again on Oct. 2nd against the Brownfield squad.
The girls worked hard and even had some help from a Grade 5 player when needed. They finished the first two sets winning 25-10 and 25-23, a close second set and good play from both teams.
Then they played four good exhibition sets to finish off the evening.
Both girls’ teams travelled to Killiam on Sept. 27th and 28th for a tournament. The older girls played on the A side, and the younger girls on the B side.
Both teams had a really fun weekend, and Killiam did a great job hosting a successful tournament.
The older girls were up against some strong teams, they played against the Killam boys’ team in the semi-final and against the Viking girls in the final.
The semi was a really close game, both teams were on fire and there were some really great plays at the net.
Coach Finkbiner said it was awesome to see the girls working so hard and hitting so hard against a bigger boys team. Then against Viking, the girls also were able to make a lot of hard hits and came out winning 25-18 and 25-10. Way to go girls!
On the B side of the same tournament the younger girls had a great time playing together and learning the system.
Eventually they were even able to help each other out instead of their coach all the time. They only won one set the whole weekend but it was such a great learning experience.
The boys’ volleyball team travelled to Forestburg on Saturday, Sept. 28th for a tournament.
The team played well and only loss a game all day against the host team in round robin play.
They had to face Forestburg in the gold medal game, and instead of letting their earlier defeat hinder their performance, they showed off their fortitude and determination to take the win in two straight sets.
Their level of focus was admirable for such a young team, with an average age on the court for the final of only 12 years old. Great job boys!
The Grades 5-9 students had a visit from Damien Kurek, Conservative Party of Canada Candidate for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding in the upcoming federal election, on Sept. 25th.
The students heard from Damien not only about his run to possibly become our Member of Parliament, but also about his extensive life journey in politics.
He shared with the students what inspired him to get involved in politics at such a young age, and what he has been doing to make a difference throughout his career so far.
It was a great experience for the students to see someone so young, yet so passionate, involved in democracy and hopefully gave them some inspiration for a possible career down the road. Thanks for visiting with the students, Mr. Kurek!
On Thursday, Sept. 26th, Theresetta hosted their annual Awards Ceremony where students accomplishments from the previous year are celebrated.
Each student receives a personal award based on their accomplishments from the year before. There are also overall academic awards, athletic awards, a fine arts awards, and most improved reading awards all handed out that night. It is a fun night celebrating the hard work of all the Theresetta students.
Mr. Ries and Miss Smawley took a dozen students to Stettler on Monday, Sept. 30th for the Federal Election Candidates Forum.
Students that attended listened to three of our five candidates.
The Green Party, People’s Party of Canada, and the Conservative Party of Canada all were in attendance for the evening.
All candidates made their platform known and did a good job answering all the questions posed to them. There were even three Theresetta students brave enough to go up and ask a question to the candidates at the open mic.
Being able to see democracy happening is always such a good experience for the students and being able to participate in a forum is a great way to learn about the democratic system we are lucky to have here in Canada.
Thursday, Oct. 3rd was the Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux at Theresetta and the Grade 9 class did a great job putting on skit to mark the day and remind the students about her remarkable life.
It is because of her that our school always remembers the motto of ‘Do little things with great love’.
Steven Hill, who is a trained geologist, came to visit the Grade 3/4 science class on Oct. 4th.
He brought in multiple rock samples and fossils to show the class.
He also helped the students identify the rock samples that they had collected themselves. He did a great job explaining the different types of rocks and showed the students what to look for when identifying rocks. The students asked so many questions and were so engaged, who know rocks were so fun? Other than geologists…
