The County of Paintearth introduced two new bylaws for council to review at the Nov. 6 meeting.

The first bylaw, 670-18, is a bylaw allowing the County of Paintearth administration to permanently close a section of county maintained and operated the road. The road located on the South side of the Southwest corner of section 3, township 38, range 9 West of the 4th meridian is slated to be shut down due to low traffic and has the support of the local residents. The bylaw passed the first reading at the meeting.

The second bylaw, 671-18, is a bylaw that defines penalties on property tax arrears and acceptable payment methods. Taxes in arrears will face a five per cent penalty on all current and arrears owed to the county on July 1 of any given tax year. Accounts still in arrears by Oct. 1 will see a penalty of 10 per cent added to all current and arrears owed.

The second bylaw also outlines acceptable payment methods as well. Tax payments can be made at the county office in-person or deposit drop, by cheque, internet banking, or by money order or bank draft. The new bylaw also offers a tax instalment plan. The tax instalment plan is eligible to all ratepayers provided taxes are not in arrears. As per the Municipal Government Act, all tax recovery costs will be added to the tax roll on top of the outstanding arrears. This bylaw passed all three readings and is now in effect.
