A man and a woman, whose bodies were found at Pigeon Lake were not wearing lifejackets, RCMP say.

Const. Chantelle Kelly said Sunday the woman, 27, and the man, 28, had been living in Edmonton.

“There is no indication based on our investigation that they were wearing lifejackets at the time,” said Kelly.

“We always tell people that it’s one of the main things to do for water safety, whether you’re in a canoe, a kayak, a boat, anything on the water, we suggest you wear a lifejacket at all times.”

RCMP continues to investigate the possible drowning.

“We’re still looking at talking to witnesses in the area, looking for any video surveillance,” Kelly said, adding “at this point, it appears to be a non-criminal, a non-suspicious event.”

The pair is believed to have drowned and was found on the northeastern shores of Pigeon Lake, about an hour north of Red Deer, RCMP said initially.

Thorsby RCMP were called at around 1:10 p.m. Friday to the shoreline of Silver Beach, near Mulhurst Bay, where they found a woman, who was declared dead on scene.

The man was found dead along the same shoreline following a search conducted with boat and helicopter assistance.

RCMP said a kayak was found a short distance away.

Thorsby RCMP received assistance from Wetaskiwin RCMP’s police boat, Mulhurst Bay and South Pigeon Lake fire departments, and EPS Air 1 and STARS helicopters for the search.

RCMP say that this was a likely drowning and that there is no indication this was a criminal incident.
