Community members, volunteers, skiers and friends of the Valley Ski Hill north of Castor came together in Alliance on April 15.

The Valley Ski Hill celebrated 75 years of operation in the spring of 2023. The steak-and-lobster supper in the Alliance Community Hall helped to end another successful season for the small ski hill nestled between Flagstaff and Paintearth Counties.

Roger and Betty Spady were special delegates on hand, having provided the land the ski hill currently occupies.

A pair of donations made to the ski hill at the event were recognized; Inter Pipeline had previously presented a cheque for $20,000 to the ski hill on March 11, which was on display, and Riley Coppock, representing Castor Men’s Night Out, presented a cheque for $15,000 to Ski Hill board member Levi Jackson.

In total, around 200 people attended the fundraising and celebratory event, which was made possible through many donors for the event in specific, plus throughout the season in general.

“It was a great turnout,” said Jackson.

“(The event) was only a handful of tickets from being sold out.”

With the donations and the funds raised, Valley Ski Hill is “very close” to reaching its fundraising goal to purchase a new groomer for the hill.
